Without a doubt, believing or not, accepting or not the reality of God is the most important decision of the human being, because his present and future depend on it. In the first part of this series we already saw six arguments that point to the evidence of the existence of a Supreme Being or universal Creator. Let us now continue this same line of thought and see five more arguments as to why I believe in God, as already said, we believe in God by faith, but not in a blind faith without foundations, but rather a sensible, rational, and credible faith.
1. I believe in God because he explains the infallibility and inerrancy of the Bible
When the Bible is studied objectively, leaving aside prejudices, one can then reach conclusions that confirm that it is not in error and that what it says is true and reliable. For example, if we study it historically, we can see that, unlike other religious books, the Bible has historical bases; the places, the names, and the eras it relates to are true in universal history. If we study it according to archaeology, time and time again, archaeologists have confirmed numerous biblical accounts. If we study it according to science, there is no problem either; the Holy Scriptures say that humanity and life, in general, are the work of a Creator, and science, with all its progress and development, has not been able to confirm the contrary.
Now, it is worth remembering that this book is a collection of 66 books written over 1,500 years by about 45 writers. Many of them did not know each other, lived at different ages, and were of different social statuses, different professions, and different languages, and yet none of them contradict each other. The supposed “errors or contradictions” that some have mentioned have their biblical, cultural, historical, and linguistic explanation. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible contains a single thread of thought: the restoration of man’s relationship with God. Common sense says that it is sensible for such a variety of writers in such a separation of time to contradict each other since each person has his perspective of things, but this is not the case, on the contrary, there is a real thread of thought.
And if this argument of the unity of thought in the different authors is important, because it speaks of Divine inspiration, what about the prophecies? It is amazing to study the biblical prophecies and see their fulfillment, for example, we can read Isaiah 53 and remember the crucifixion of Jesus, but we must keep in mind that Isaiah was written about 750 years before Christ. The point here is that the Bible has proven to be trustworthy and reliable, and this trustworthy and reliable book speaks of a Creator God, Almighty, Omnipresent, Omniscient, Sovereign, Personal, Perfect, Just, and Good Judge among other attributes.
2. I believe in God because he explains the survival of the people of Israel
The existence of Israel today is evidence of the existence of God. When we look back at the history of this nation, it is surprising to see the difficulties, wars, conflicts, and situations of hatred and near extermination that it has faced, but in one way or another, it has resisted and overcome.
It is particularly surprising how this nation, which is among the oldest peoples of humanity, even though it can be called the people of constant exile or constant diaspora, is due to its centuries as communities outside of its place of origin or territory, it is amazing to see how they maintained themselves and survived since it was only in 1948 after almost 2000 years of exile that they were able to formally and institutionally return to their land. Ben-Gurion, who was the first president of the modern state of Israel, said at the time: “In Israel, to be realistic, one has to believe in miracles .” Without a doubt, looking at the history of Israel is to see miracle after miracle, miracles that point to Divine providence.
3. I believe in God because he explains the survival of Christianity
Just as it was said that it is surprising to see in history the resistance and survival of the people of Israel in the face of so many obstacles, the same happens with Christianity, because basically since its beginning it has been persecuted, and although it has indeed had its periods of peace and freedom, persecution and difficulties in different parts of the world have been a constant; although in certain places it is permitted and respected, Christianity in other places still suffers persecution today.
The Bible, for example, while it is the most beloved book by many, is also the most hated book by many. The Bible is a book that has been sought to be eliminated by many throughout history, including King Jehoiakim of Judah, Roman emperors such as Diocletian, and communist leaders even today. This sacred book has been persecuted, humiliated, criticized, and attacked, but simply by the Christian people it has survived, and not only this, but it remains the most widely read book in the world.
4. I believe in God because he explains the reality of miracles
We speak of miracles as supernatural events, events that cannot occur by natural or normal means without any external agent, supernatural or special events performed by God. We know that Christianity is based on miracles such as the resurrection of Christ, for example, and this is not difficult to believe since God believed in Christianity is not only a Creator but also a Sustainer, active and personal in His creation, a God who intervenes in His creation with special events.
Even in our days if we do research we will find testimonies of people who are not even Christians who have witnessed Divine interventions, doctors who have witnessed things they cannot explain, people in dangerous situations and suddenly something happened for their help, so we find many stories that while several could have some natural explanation, even emotional and mental, many stories leave us speechless and, of course, without a possible natural explanation.
5. I believe in God because he explains what science has not been able to explain
Let us remember that when we talk about science we talk about objective knowledge through observation, proposition, and verification; now, it is notorious that with all the advances of science and technology our days man has already been able to visit the moon, where much more is known about space than in previous centuries, and where in general more is known about the reality of many phenomena, but even with all this and more, science with its great advance has not been able to demonstrate the origin of life by natural means without the need for an Intelligent Being, it has made hypotheses, theories, but has not been able to verify said hypotheses and theories that leave God out of the equation.
Believing in God remains the simple and natural way to explain life without going against true science. True science leans towards a Creator. Many people believe that being a scientist is being an atheist or an agnostic, but that is not the case. While it is true that many scientists are atheists or agnostics, there are many renowned scientists both now and in history who have recognized the necessary existence of a Creator and Sustaining God. The famous French chemist, physicist, mathematician, and bacteriologist Louis Pasteur used to say: “ A little science takes you away from God, but a lot of science brings you closer to Him.”
